Which math museum should you go to with your kids?
November is coming, that slightly depressing time when the cold sets in and Christmas is not here yet. But it's also the school holidays: the perfect opportunity to organize a little getaway with your children to show them one of the X mathematical museums in the world. So, put a smile on your face, because today, we're taking you on a tour of the world of mathematics:
The Museum of Maths in New York
In this museum, everything is interactive, you don't see math, you do math: play with a digital wall, change the lights to make shapes appear, create 3D, or try a square-wheeled bike!
3-8 year olds will take off their shoes to meet “Kif Kif the Caliph”, but only after having participated in a good number of mathematical tests.
9-14 year olds will be able to carry out several colorful experiments. Here, everything encourages reflection, through manipulation!
Finally, those aged 15 and over will be able to take part in an exhibition on “why are maths interesting?” and discover maths in the world around them :)
The aim of this space in the heart of Vienna's museum district is to show children that maths is not a series of dull numbers but an exciting adventure (a bit like at Déclic (link)). Under the watchful eyes of educators and pedagogues, children discover different mathematical fields from geometry to measurement. Older children can listen to lectures on careers in science and maths.
This is the world's first mathematical center. There, you can experience new things like standing in the middle of a giant soap bubble and observing the complex mathematical process that results from it or recreating Leonardo da Vinci's constructions using the equipment at your disposal!
Archimedes' Garden in Florence
Several laboratories will allow your little geniuses to discover the history of numbers or to discover geometry while playing. Through different exhibitions they will also be able to discover the history of mathematics on postage stamps or women in the world of maths.
The Mathematics Museum in Tokyo
Children can wander around and manipulate several mathematical objects. Workshops and a video lounge to learn more are also available to them.
But rest assured, a math museum is in the works! On the initiative of the famous mathematician Cédric Villani (link), the museum should open its doors by 2020! Mr. Villani stated in an interview given to the JDD that “ The idea [was] to create a small museum of 500 m² halfway between the Palais de la découverte and the Cité des sciences, aimed at schoolchildren, teachers and the general public. Of course, it will be half the size of its best-known competitors [in the United States, Japan or Italy], but its offering promises to be rich and attractive.”
But before that, if your children want to discover maths in a different way in Paris, you can go to the Cité des Sciences, to the Kidexpo (which is taking place at the moment, or even register them for one of our Topla workshops.
