Article: Your pulley castle

Ton château-poulie

Your pulley castle

This week, improvise as a construction expert! Gears, pulleys and other cogs will no longer hold any secrets for you... because you are about to build yourself a reinforced concrete pulley castle!!!

Material :

  • 2 empty paper towel rolls
  • 1 piece of cardboard large enough
  • paint and 1 brush
  • 2 straws
  • 1 spool of thread
  • 1 small plastic glass
  • 1 hole punch
  • 1 black marker
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 glue
  • small figurines to bring your castle to life

Step 1
Start by painting your two rolls of paper and your cardboard board gray.
Step 2
Draw bricks on it with a black marker.
Step 3
Using your pair of scissors, cut two small notches face to face at the top of the "columns", they will be used later to install the pulley.
Once the notches are made on the 2 columns, glue them to their base. Be careful that the notches of the two columns are facing each other so that the straws can fit together well.
Step 4
Take your little glass, you can make it look however you want. We decided to paint it yellow! Make two holes in it using the hole punch, opposite each other.
Attach the wire to the holes in the glass: this small glass will serve as a bucket which will be raised and lowered by the pulley!
Thread the straws together (with the bendable parts at the ends). Then, thread the spool onto the straws and tape it so that it can no longer turn.
Step 5
Place your little mechanism in the notches of the columns. You can turn the straws and thus make the little bucket go down and then up!
How does the pulley work? The suspended spool is rotated using the ends of the straws. The ribbon surrounding the spool winds and unwinds on the spool: the load (here it is our glass) is attached to one side of the rope and you pull on the other side using the straws! This pulley system allows you to lift this heavy load more easily.
Now for the final step, our favorite... Bring your castle to life by adding carefully chosen characters.
