Blackout Tuesday
June 2, 2020, Blackout Tuesday. We see #BlackoutTuesday everywhere, but what does it mean?
Following the death of George Floyd , an African-American man violently arrested and asphyxiated with a knee on the neck by the Minneapolis police on May 25, 2020, waves of protests broke out in several states in the United States and around the world. The protesters' demands are clear and a well-known slogan can be read on all the placards: " Black Lives Matter" .
In support of the many victims of police violence targeting African-Americans , several record companies took a vow of silence on Tuesday, June 2, 2020. Several television channels (MTV, BET, Nickelodeon) went black for 8 minutes and 46 seconds , the duration of the viral video showing the agony of "Big Floyd".
Some labels have decided that no music releases will be made this week, in tribute and support to the victims and protesters.
The movement has spread across social media at high speed, and many brands, public figures and personal accounts are displaying a black square , representing this vow of solidarity silence. The goal is to encourage the public to reflect on this omnipresent, unjust and deadly social problem . The protesters are demanding justice and equal treatment for all American citizens.
Let's take care of each other ♥
