A little psychology to understand stereotypes!
It was in 1999 that Spencer, Steele & Quinn, social psychology researchers, developed a study on stereotype threats (a few words that have great impacts). But what is stereotype threat?
To put it simply, it’s the impact that a stereotype can have on a person. Researchers have shown that when a woman takes a math test, her result can be affected by the stereotype that “ women have lower math abilities than men .” In other words: her performance will drop. Girl power is unfortunately so weak when faced with the laws of psychology…
Let's illustrate this foreword. If I tell you to reproduce this shape? Would you be able to do it? No need to talk about equality for each of us to answer "Easy!" with more or less certainty. However, researchers have shown that you, the readers, would have more difficulty reproducing it if the task is presented to you as a geometry test. If you are told that it is a drawing game, your performance will increase.
You see? The less you think the task has to do with math, the better your results will be.
You, the reader, will not have any variation in performance, regardless of the context, whether the task is presented to you as a game or a geometry test, your performance will be similar. Strange isn't it? Not so much...
Lower self-confidence and confidence in one's abilities among girls - due to stereotypes - would help explain these differences. Given this observation, we can begin to understand the reason for the lack of equality, of parity, in orientation for example. Why are there more girls in literary fields, and more boys in scientific fields?
Let's empower girls, so that they can achieve and have the ability to achieve as many great projects as their friends without being stopped by preconceived ideas. That is the whole goal of The Moon Project 🚀
