MÖLKKY TIME!
It starts with the first letter of the word “Maths” and is written in 6 letters: Mölkky!
But what is Mölkky?
If you've been living in a cave for the past few years, we'll give you a little reminder! Mölkky is a game that originated in Finland and is becoming increasingly popular. The idea is to place 12 wooden pins (outdoors if possible), numbered from 1 to 12, and knock them down! Simple, you might say? Not so fast! (rules link) The winner will be the one who gets 50 points (and only 50) according to the numbers on the knocked down pins. To knock them down, you use a wooden stick: the "Mölkky"!
Five reasons why you'll be playing Möllky this summer with your kids?
1- Because it's simple and will delight young and old alike! Athletes can imagine themselves at the Olympic Games of shot put (but not too hard, the goal is to knock down the pins), mathematicians can find all the possible combinations to get 50 points and the laziest can enjoy the sun in peace ;)
2 - Because your children will learn addition without realizing it! Ditch the math books and textbooks this weekend, there are much simpler ways to learn addition! 50 is 2 +12+12+12+12, but it's also 1+1+1+1…. There are dozens of combinations to make 50!
3 - Because now everyone plays Mölkky and you don't want to be left out! The average age of players is 30 and well, it's become a bit like the pétanque of the 21st century.
4- Because the French are Mölkky champions! You won't believe it, but it's true, France was crowned Mölkky world champion (link) this summer during the championship that took place in Brittany and welcomed 1,300 players from 14 different nations! When will Mölkky become an Olympic discipline?
5- Because, if you like it, you can surely join a Mölkky association near you! Are you in Hérault or Finistère? In Loiret or Mayenne? Don't worry, there are Mölkky associations all over France now. Enough to improve your skills and become friends with other (new) future Mölkky fans!
