Should you have your children revise this summer?
Yes, but not just anyhow!
But how can you help your child revise properly? By offering them summer activities that combine observations, experiments and manipulations so that they can learn while having fun , because having fun is what holidays are all about!
In the dictionary we find several definitions of the verb revise:
A - carefully reread what you have already studied to remind yourself of it.
B - to examine something, to study it with a view to verifying it, correcting it or validating it.
When we talk about Clara's summer revision, 8 years old, we think of the first definition. Even if we don't go to the beach with a schoolbag on our back to review all the lessons of the year, we take a holiday workbook filled with very academic exercises under our elbow. With her feet in the sand, Clara is always on the school benches...
We say stop!
There is another way to revise, much less restrictive and much more effective; we turn to the second definition. During the holidays, to revise the mathematics program I do not need to take out my lessons, I just have to open my eyes wide and look around me to see, or re-see as the re-vision wants, my lessons from a new angle.
Here are some examples of fun and creative activities that allow you to revise without realizing it, anywhere and all the time:
During my journeys, I revise geometric shapes by observing road signs.
With the whole family, I revise division and multiplication by playing Mobi.
Under the parasol I revise fractions by inventing myself as a barmaid for an evening.
On a rainy day I revise right angles by creating my own postcard. The activity is here.
On the sunny terrace I review the hours and minutes by creating my sundial. The activity here.
I am reviewing additions by playing Molky . The rules of the game are here.
Fun revisions don't stop at maths, here's the proof:
By looking at the holiday itinerary I can even revise a little geography.
By making my own ice cream I am practicing science in the kitchen.
And on the beach I can even revise my vocabulary by doing crosswords.
With these revisions which combine observations, experiments and manipulations, children learn while having fun for the greatest happiness of all vacationers!
