Article: Déclic becomes Topla

Déclic devient Topla

Déclic becomes Topla

Many of you have been waiting for it since we posted a survey on our Facebook page : here it is, the big change has just happened! Goodbye Déclic et des Trucs, hello Topla! We know, you were attached to Déclic et des Trucs, but the enthusiasm was still there when we asked you about our different ideas for new names. It really touched us. We have always built our company with you, parents, and with you, children, surrounded by a wonderful community ready to do anything to trigger the mathematical spark in children who are stuck on this subject!

Why did you decide to make such a transition? It is time to reveal the whole project to you and explain the reason for this great metamorphosis. And to do this, let's start from the birth of Déclic and Trucs, in 2014...

But actually, why Déclic et des Trucs?

Déclic et des Trucs began to take shape in 2013 in the mind of Héloïse, the co-founder. The latter, a math tutor with middle school students, has to deal with many children who are reluctant to do math... And it's not bad faith on their part: the cause of their blockage generally goes back to primary school! Learning abstract concepts by heart is something difficult. In France, it is even estimated that one in five children enters sixth grade with significant blocks in mathematics... Héloïse then decides to go over the basics with them, in a different way from the one they saw at school. Exit photocopies of multiplication tables, hello cooking recipes, with practical application!

"With some students, I tried ten, twenty, a hundred different exercises, but nothing worked. I finally realized that their blockages dated back to primary school and that, to overcome this kind of gap, traditional methods were not enough: it was necessary to innovate. So, I had the idea of using slightly different, more fun activities: for example, making cakes to understand the concepts of mass and volume. And that worked really well!"

To give children a taste for learning, the best method is to make them play...to make them think "CLICK" by using different little "TRICKS" (eggs, flour, scraps of paper, scissors, etc.)... Déclic et des Trucs was born!

Clément, Héloïse's partner, quickly joined the adventure and a few months later, the start-up successively won first prize at the École Polytechnique Start-Up Week-End, first prize at the Mash-Up and first prize at the Wizbii Challenge!

No immediate questioning of the name, it suited us, it suited you too! The logo has evolved…

At the beginning, Déclic et des Trucs was this:

Old Declic and Stuff logo

Then the logo was transformed at the beginning of 2016:

click logo and stuff

Why should we separate from Déclic and Trucs?

Little by little, we began to see some limits to “Déclic et des Trucs”. We were very attached to it, but we had to face the facts: our brand name could hinder our development, and this for several reasons.

First of all, it's a very long name, difficult to write.

“Clicks and stuff”, “Clicks and stuff”, “Delicetdestrucs”… When we say it out loud, it is far from obvious how to write our brand name. 4 or 5 words? Balance would suggest writing it in 5, with Clicks… But that is precisely the whole play on words. But the matter was not clear…

A name that is difficult to remember

Think about the names of famous brands that you know: it's a safe bet that these brands have names that are 2 words long at most! Apple, Decathlon, Orange... they're still easier to remember, right?

A name that we don't understand right away

Déclic et des trucs, it also sounds like Des clics et des claques, and then when we hesitate between Des Clics and Déclic, it's because we didn't immediately grasp the concept... The proof? If you've already spoken about us to someone you know who didn't know us, you must have been confronted with the eternal "Des quoi? Des clics? Déclic? Et des Trucs? Ah that's funny!" So yes it's funny, but we don't understand everything right away... And if we lose the meaning of the brand from the first approach, we're in trouble!

A name that cannot be used abroad

Our greatest wish: that all children around the WORLD can have access to our educational activities, so that they discover that learning is not necessarily boring and even better: it can be FUN. To do this, we needed a name that was simpler, with simple sounds, and that was easy to pronounce.

Children prefer Topla !

For a few months now, we have decided to integrate children into the very heart of our company's decisions. Every first Wednesday of the month, the Children's Tribe arrives in our offices to take power! During the last meeting, we organized a brainstorming session with them on a new brand name. Ideas flowed, and 2 names stood out: “Tribu Carotte” (don't ask us why... Children have wild imaginations!) and “Topla”. Tribu Carotte worried some people (“But that means we're carrots, and I don't want to end up grated!”, said Kaylan), so Topla quickly won over our budding mini “colleagues”...

And the community too!

After the Grand Rally of the Children's Tribe, we wanted to ask our community directly. You have supported and carried us since the beginning of the adventure, so it was up to you to make the final decision and validate the project. So we conducted a survey on Facebook:

facebook poll topla

Many of you responded to us with great enthusiasm, each time explaining the reason for your choice.

Voting results:

21 Click
18 Topla
7 Shifumi
1 Jeito
1 Carrot Tribe
1 Takadir (community member creation!)
0 Takako
0 Tumbo

Topla has therefore once again appeared in your favorites, just behind “Déclic”. But Déclic is already the name of a magazine as well as the name of a website specializing in the online sale of furniture… Novelty has won out!

Time for a change: goodbye Déclic et des Trucs, hello Topla!

Why is Topla great? Topla immediately won over our entire team, and for several reasons!

→ It's short
We wanted something simpler, now it is!

→ It's easy to write and remember
And what is simple is easier to remember! It is very easy to guess how to write “Topla”, so there is no risk of making a mistake between “Déclic” and “Des clics”

→ It’s easy to pronounce (even abroad!)
As one of you rightly pointed out, the O and A sounds are easier to remember and are also easier to pronounce abroad.

→ It pleases children, but also parents
As we just explained, it was essential for us that you like this new name, children and parents alike. After having discussed it at length with all of you, we are convinced that we are on the right track.

→ It is the gesture of victory following the completion of each of our activities!
The “Topla” gesture speaks for itself: it’s what children do, among themselves or with their parents, when they achieve something they’re proud of. And that’s exactly what our educational and fun activities generate in the minds of our top clients: a feeling of success and increased self-confidence! So…Welcome Topla!
